In Roman Opalka's '1965 / 1 – ∞' project, each individual canvas is referred to as a 'Detail.' Every canvas is a continuation of the previous one, representing a specific fragment of a single, lifelong conceptual artwork mapping infinity.
Why did the background of Opalka's paintings change over time?
Starting in 1968, Opalka decided to add 1% more white to each background. His goal was to eventually reach 'blanc sur blanc' (white on white), where white numbers would be painted on a white background, symbolizing the progression toward the end of life.
